Pool equipment breaks. That’s just how it is. You’ve got pumps, filters, heaters, cleaners – all working together to keep your water clean and swimmable. When one thing goes bad, it usually takes something else with it.
Here’s what we see all the time in Cypress and Houston: people ignore their equipment until it completely dies. Then they’re looking at a $2,000 repair bill instead of a $200 maintenance check.
Let’s talk about variable speed pumps first because that’s probably why you’re here. Everyone wants to know if they actually save money.
Short answer: Yes, but not immediately.
A decent variable speed pump costs $800-1,200. Your old single-speed pump probably cost $300. So you’re looking at spending more upfront. But here’s the thing – that VS pump can cut your electricity bill by 30-70% depending on how you run it.
Most people run their pumps too fast anyway. You don’t need your pump screaming at 3,450 RPM for 8 hours a day. That’s just burning electricity. A VS pump at 1,500 RPM for 12 hours does the same job and uses way less power.
Pentair makes solid VS pumps. So does Hayward. Jandy’s are fine too. Sta-Rite is actually Pentair now, so same technology. Century makes the V-Green motors that you can retrofit into existing pumps – cheaper option if your pump housing is still good.
We troubleshoot pool equipment. Pumps, motors, filters, heaters. Basic stuff. But we don’t tear apart pump motors and rebuild them with new impellers and seals. That’s not what most pool companies do anymore.
Why? Because it’s usually not worth it. Labor costs more than the parts are worth. Plus, if we rebuild your motor and it fails in two months, now we’re warranty liable for a 10-year-old motor with mixed old and new parts.
If your pump is going bad, we’ll tell you to replace it. If it’s just the motor, we might replace just that. Depends on the situation.
Your filter does the actual cleaning. The pump just moves water. But people obsess over pumps and ignore filters until they’re completely clogged.
Cartridge filters need cleaning every 2-4 weeks. Not rinsing with a garden hose – actual cleaning. Spray them down, let them dry, rotate them. You should have two sets so one’s always ready.
Sand filters need backwashing when the pressure gauge hits 8-10 PSI above starting pressure. Don’t just backwash on a schedule. Watch the gauge. And change that sand every 3-5 years, not every 10 like some people think.
DE filters are the best for water clarity but the most annoying to maintain. You’ll be adding DE powder after every backwash. Skip it a few times and your filter grids get coated with oils and gunk that won’t come off.
Polaris Vac-Sweep 380 is still one of the best pressure-side cleaners. Thing’s been around for 20 years because it works. Beats up your pool walls a bit, but it picks up everything.
Suction-side cleaners are cheaper but limited. They only pick up what fits through your skimmer. Large debris just gets pushed around.
Robotic cleaners work great when they work. Problem is they’re electronic devices sitting in chlorinated water. Parts fail. Cables get twisted. Motors burn out. But when they’re running right, they clean better than anything else.
Running your pump 24/7. Waste of electricity. 8-12 hours is plenty for most pools.
Not cleaning your skimmer baskets. Clogged baskets make your pump work harder. Burns out motors faster.
Ignoring weird noises. Pumps don’t just randomly start making grinding sounds. That’s bearings going bad. Catch it early, you might just need a motor. Wait too long, you’re buying a whole new pump.
Using the wrong chemicals in the wrong order. Shock and algaecide at the same time? They cancel each other out. Waste of money and your pool stays green.
Not checking your equipment pad after storms. Electrical connections get loose. Timers get fried. Water gets in places it shouldn’t be.
Pumps: If it’s leaking from the seal, motor’s getting loud, or it’s tripping breakers. Don’t try to baby it along.
Filters: Cartridges that won’t come clean anymore. Sand that’s been in there 7+ years. DE grids with tears or permanent staining.
Heaters: If repair costs more than half of replacement cost. Heat exchangers are expensive. Control boards are expensive. Sometimes you just need a new heater.
Timers: Old mechanical timers with missing tabs or broken gears. Just replace them. Digital timers are more reliable anyway.
Here’s what happens when you ignore maintenance: your pump motor burns out because the impeller was clogged. That clogs your filter faster. Dirty filter puts more strain on the motor. Dead motor means no circulation. No circulation means algae. Algae means chemical costs go up.
One failed $300 motor turns into a $1,000+ problem real fast.

Electrical connections have to be right. Ground wires, GFCI breakers, proper conduit. Pool equipment runs on 220V. Screw that up and you’re looking at fire hazards.
Plumbing has to be sized right. You can’t just throw any pump on any system. Flow rates matter. Pipe diameter matters. Turn radius matters.
Equipment pads need proper drainage. Water pooling around electrical equipment is bad news.
Most people get VS pumps installed and never program them. They just run them like single-speed pumps at full blast. That defeats the whole purpose.
Here’s basic programming that actually works:
Adjust based on bather load, weather, season. More swimmers = more runtime. Hot weather = more runtime. Pool parties = bump it up for a few days.
